The Team

One of the things that we have grown to appreciate over the months is the contribution that so many people make to getting such a personal project from a misty vision to reality.

In rough order of appearance we would like to thank the following:

Alan McCrone

Alan is our neighbour, friend and ally. And, if I forgot to mention it, owned the land and sold it to us! He has amazing experience in renovation, having undertaken extensive work on many listed properties in Edinburgh and around. More recently he has been working on his and Lona's home next to Witch Wood and is now offering his experience through project managing period property renovations.

Colin Campbell

Our architect who was on site just 1 working day after we first saw the plot on Bonnington Road

He has been a thoughtful, humorous and supportive partner throughout.

Amy Dickson

Amy, our solicitor, tirelessly and patiently led me through the intricacies of Scottish land law, with which I had only had the slightest of contact before. Despite delays, complex conditions and all sorts she has remained unflappable!

Mick McWilliam

Mick provided a topographic survey with digital accuracy thanks to the wonders of modern technology. Thanks to Mick we know that there is a 20 metre rise from the East end to the West end of the plot and we could design the visibility splay with some accuracy.

Jamie Cowan

Jamie is our QS from McGowan Miller. He has been involved from close to the off working up costs for getting services to the site and constructing the visibility splay so that we had comfort when making an offer for the land that we miught still be able to afford to build a house on it! He is at the centre of the ongoing project with Colin, closely working on costing, tenders and bills of quantity to ensure the right job for the right money.

Jack MacGregor and Luke Mallet

As we worked towards an understanding of what we were looking for with a string emphasis on traditional materials with a modern twist we had the good fortune to find Jack and Luke's company on the internet. We found as we developed our thoughts on the design of the house and what we wanted out of it that a natural green oak structural frame felt just the right thing to do.

Jack and Luke are Alba Green Oak Frames. They live and breath it and are true craftsmen.

Stuart McKay & Mike Kelly

Stuart, Mike and the team at McKay & Partners have done Stirling work for us as our engineers. Never a simple job this has been further complicated by the green oak frame, the sloping site, drainage and the very poor ground conditions just around where we are building the house!

Stuart's knowledge of suppliers and contractors in the area has also proven to be very valuable indeed.

Jacqui Tomlins & Gordon Moodie

Whilst we have always taken a fairly pragmatic view of the green credentials of our build we have been strongly motivated by the desire to have low running costs in exchange for a higher up front capital commitment.

So we commissioned a report on what would be the optimum combination of new technology for our particular home. Strangely it wasn't as simple as one might suppose to find companies prepared to undertake this kind of work. However Jacqui and her team, already known to several members of the team, stepped forward into the breach and will be rewarded with a contract for the supply of the heating, ventilation and plumbing elements of the build.

T Graham & Son (Builders)
Following the tender process and therefore, inevitably the last to join the team was T Grahams the builders from Langhom. Of course lots of people from Grahams were involved but a particular mention must be made for Rob, our site agent, patient, conscientious and always with a ready quip and Billy, the Graham's project manager again patient, thorough, courteous and doing his level best to find the balance between quality and cost.
Ok their web site may need some work (!) but find out more at:
